The prayers below are written for that position: standing beside someone else's illness, able to do almost nothing except pray.

Saint Charbel is the Maronite hermit of Annaya, and for more than a century the sick have been carried to his tomb by people who love them. That is the shape of this devotion. A Prayer to Saint Charbel for a Sick Loved One

The core prayer. Say the person's name out loud where the prayer marks it, and say what is actually wrong with them. The tradition treats plain speech as reverence, not the opposite.

Saint Charbel, healer of the sick, I bring you the name of someone I love. (Name) is ill, and I cannot make them well. You know what it is to lay a life before God without holding anything back, so lay this one before him now. Ask the Lord to heal their body, to ease their pain, and to steady their heart in the hours when they are afraid. Watch over them tonight in my place, because I cannot be with them every hour and God can. Amen.

Many people pray this once in the morning and once at night, keeping the same words rather than searching for new ones. Repetition is not a lack of imagination here. It is how a family holds a long illness.

A Prayer for Someone Facing Cancer

For a grave diagnosis, when the treatment is long and the outcome is unknown. This prayer asks honestly and does not pretend to know what God will do.

Saint Charbel, they have been given news that changed everything. Saint Charbel, in a little while (Name) will be in the hands of others. Be with them when I cannot be. Guide the hands of the surgeon and every person in that room. Keep (Name) safe through what is coming, bring them back to us, and give them a quiet mind now, in these last minutes before they go. Into God's hands I place them. Amen.

If there is time, pray it aloud with them rather than silently over them. Being prayed for out loud by someone who loves you is a different experience from being prayed for at a distance.

A Prayer for a Sick Child

For a parent or grandparent at the bedside of a child who is unwell, whether the illness is passing or serious.

Saint Charbel, this child is small and this illness is not. (Name) does not understand what is happening to them, and I cannot explain it. Ask the Lord to put his hand on this little one and make them well. Take away the pain that they cannot put into words. Give me steadiness so that when they look at my face they see calm and not terror. Amen.

A Prayer for the Carer and the Family Keeping Vigil

How to Pray for Someone Else

Interceding for another person has its own practices in the Maronite tradition, and they are simple.

Pray the novena on their behalf. The nine-day novena to Saint Charbel can be prayed entirely by you, in their name. They do not need to know, do not need to be well enough to pray, and do not need to be devout. You hold the intention in their place for nine days.

Use the oil. Saint Charbel oil is blessed oil from his tomb at Annaya, and it is most often applied by one person to another. Anoint the forehead or the place of the illness with a small sign of the cross while you pray. It is a sacramental, not a medicine, and it works as a physical act of faith rather than a remedy.

Keep the 22nd of the month. Saint Charbel died on 24 December and the 22nd of each month is kept as his day, marked with Mass, fasting, and prayer for the sick. Families with a long illness often anchor themselves to that date and bring the same name back every month.

Pray with them, not only for them. This is the part most people skip. Sitting at the bedside and saying a short prayer out loud, together, does something that praying at home does not. If they are unconscious or too weak to respond, pray it anyway, near enough that they could hear.

When Healing Does Not Come

Sometimes the person you are praying for does not get better. The tradition has never promised otherwise, and it would be a poor devotion if it did. Saint Charbel himself died of a stroke while saying Mass, in a hermitage, at seventy.

The Church holds that no prayer offered in love is wasted, and that grace often arrives in a form other than the one requested: as peace in a hard week, as a reconciliation before the end, as the strength of a family that did not come apart. That is not a consolation prize handed out when the real request fails. It is what people who have kept these vigils actually report.
